Podcasts are on fire lately. We've especially enjoyed the wide range and high quality of cybersecurity podcasts that are available now for free. They offer a cost-effective and convenient way to stay up to date on security news, brush up your skills, and expose yourself to a wider range of perspectives. For that reason, we polled our internal security experts to find out what their favorite security podcasts are these days. Here’s what they recommend you tune into!
Need a quick update on daily cybersecurity happenings? The CyberWire’s podcast—published every weekday afternoon East Coast time—promises to bring “more signal, less noise,” and our team loves it. The concise podcast includes interviews with experts spanning industry, academia, and research, and shares perspectives from all over the world. If you want to make sure you never miss the top news of the day but don’t have the time to skim several publications, the CyberWire makes it easy to get your daily fix.
Security Weekly produces podcasts, webcasts, and more. We particularly recommend the Paul’s Security Weekly podcast, which dives into trending topics and features a new expert from across a wide range of organizations for each episode. (Our very own Senior Solutions Architect, Kevin Donovan, was recently invited to speak on the show!) The show bills itself as, “a chance for a bunch of us security nerds to get together and talk shop.” With each episode about two hours in length, if you have a long commute or like to listen to podcasts at the gym, you’ll get a more in-depth look at the security topics of the moment, going both deep on the details and broad on the perspective.
Defensive Security is a podcast designed for everyday security practitioners. The hosts, two down-to-earth security pros, speak their minds about the current state of security. They aim to explore current security news and pick out lessons that all practitioners can apply to their work. Need to know what Spectre and Meltdown mean for your org, or get tips on how to better protect your company from rampant malware? This approximately weekly podcast might be just the ticket.
Computer security industry veterans Graham Cluley and Carole Theriault chat weekly about cybercrime, hacking, and online privacy. For example, Smashing Security recently covered the improper security protocols that lead up to the Hawaii missile false alarm incident. Additionally, they take a look at where cybersecurity intersects with politics, hot topics like cryptocurrency, and newsworthy hacks and breaches. They do a great job of peeling back the onion to look at what really happened and what you as a security pro need to know about the week’s headlines.
If you’re looking for a more accessible podcast, one that will appeal even to non-security practitioners, Security Now is worth a listen. About two hours long and released weekly, these episodes focus on important issues related to PC security. They often talk about items in the news, but focus on the long-standing problems in the industry and explore solutions. Their goal is to produce an episode each week with relevant takeaways for the average computer user.
This podcast isn’t 100% security focused, but we love the geeks’ take on tech news, which ranges from media to security to the internet trends. If you are looking for a broader podcast that hits on security but also covers anything and everything interesting in the world of technology, Grumpy Old Geeks is a great way to spend about two hours each week.
